Dome Rock 2006 Set3 Pics

Dome Rock is best accessed via French Creek Rd. at Detroit Oregon.
The 8 mile drive starts out with at least 4 miles of one lane of pavement
following the French Creek drainage. The last 4 miles is casual gravel road
that has very unforgiving drop offs. This is not a road to get distracted on.
The road will accommodate two wheel drive vehicles just fine.
Make sure your brakes are in good shape for the way down.

Views of Dome Rock's north face (shear vertical) can be seen on the way in.
The trailhead is now marked at the road edge. There is ample parking space
for maybe 6 vehicles right at the trail head.

The first mile of trail has little elevation gain, with some modest gain and
loss in the old growth in that stretch. The next 1/4 mile is gain deep in the
trees. The last 1/4 mile breaks out above timberline with great views.
The last few hundred feet of trail puts you close to some distinct vertical
drop offs. The north and west faces of Dome Rock offer no room for error while
walking around on top.

There are remnants of an old fire lookout at the top in the form of broken
window glass and just enough cement slab to make for a nice kitchen and
sitting spot. The top will accomodate two small tents and a few single
person bivvy sites.

Even though the hike is a casual one, the summit is not, in my opinion,
a place for small children.

Mt. Jefferson to the east.

Minto Mountain and Three Fingered Jack to the southeast.

Looking southwest in to Tumble Lake.

Looking southeast to Detroit Lake.
